Today we’re spotlighting Lota, a volunteer with our Food Bank 2 Home Program!
Last April, inspired by his faith to give back to his community, Lota googled “food banks near me” and found Food Banks Mississauga. Lota began volunteering as a Donor Ambassador, connecting directly with individual donors over the phone to thank them for their valued support. He then took on a new role as an Order Packer for the Food Bank 2 Home program, preparing and packing customized food deliveries for homebound neighbours who experience mobility barriers that prevent them from accessing their neighbourhood food bank.
“There were times in the past when I needed help putting food on the table.”
How does volunteering make you feel?
“It feels good. Personally, I have felt the impact of rising food prices. And as an international student / new immigrant, there were times in the past when I needed help putting food on the table. Knowing that there is an organization with passionate people, relevant systems and structures in place to help alleviate this need keeps me coming back. Yes, I am convinced this is definitely making an impact in the community.”
What motivated you to begin volunteering?
“I had volunteered at food banks, homeless shelters and soup kitchens before moving to Toronto. My Father [God] is extremely generous, he frequently inspires me to help out, provide support and things of that nature. So I’d say it’s primarily Him. He stirs up a desire in me to contribute positively to the community I reside in.”
“Nothing substantial is accomplished alone. It takes a committed group.”
Were you surprised by anything when you first started volunteering?
“I was surprised (in a good way), by the scale and how organized the operations were. It runs like a well-oiled machine. Props to the employees and volunteers, they are doing amazing work. I had no idea just how much work goes into this. Although it is a non-profit, I see the same rigor and organizational roles I saw in the corporate world. While volunteering at the food bank, I have met folks who work in Marketing, Admin, Client and Customer Relations, Human Resources, Operations, Warehousing/Supply Chain. What I’ve learned, nothing substantial is accomplished alone. It takes a committed group.”
What is so special to you about Food Banks Mississauga?
“For me I’ll say the people. So far, everyone I have met is very passionate about the work they are doing, they give their best and do it excellently.”
Do you have any specific memories or specific moments here that have impacted you?
“Christmas was great. We put together holiday meals, chickens etc. for families. Folks in the community volunteered to drive/deliver the food to families and seniors who couldn’t get out much. Fellow volunteers baked and shared home-made cookies. There was a lot of kindness in the air. It was lovely to see.”
“There is a sense of fulfilment that comes when we serve the needs of others.”
Why should other people volunteer at Food Banks Mississauga?
“There is a sense of fulfilment that comes when we serve the needs of others. This wholesomeness can’t be found in any other way, regardless of how accomplished one might be in any other area.”
