Meet Ashley, one of the Agency Relations Summer Student’s at The Mississauga Foodbank:
“I’m an Honours Bachelor of Arts Psychology student at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay.
I’ve always cared about helping people who experience unjust adversity such as refugees, those with mental illnesses, and those who experience poverty and hunger. I always do what I can to help to the best of my ability.
When I saw this job posting, it sounded exactly like the area I wanted to work in. I wanted my job to mean something, to be meaningful to other people, and to know that the work I’m doing is helping other people.
When we think about food banks, I think we think about one specific kind of demographic, when that’s actually not true. A huge variety of people use food banks. That’s why food banks are so important to the community.
I really enjoy working here. I’ve been learning a lot about the food banks, different resources in Mississauga, and about the clients that use the food bank.
I get to talk to people, listen to their stories, and interact with them. It gives me insight into who our clients are, what our clients are going through, and ways we can improve our programs in order to suit their needs the best we can. It can be easy for people get lost in numbers. Talking to people about what they’re going through really humanizes the experience.”
