8% More Thanksgiving Drive Donations Compared to 58% More Food Bank Usage in Mississauga

Food Banks Mississauga closes its 2024 Thanksgiving Drive raising $844,892

Food Banks Mississauga’s 2024 Thanksgiving Drive, sponsored by Keurig Dr Pepper Canada, ran from September 9 to October 21, raising $844,892 – 8% more than last year. Mississauga is experiencing a growing food insecurity crisis wherein over 56,000 residents, including almost 16,000 children, are turning to a food bank. This reflects a 58% year-over-year increase, outpacing the donations received.

The goal to raise $800,000 was set to meet the current need for food support. While the Thanksgiving Drive brought in essential funds, the increasing need is unwavering.

“I’m extremely thankful to our community for their generosity during Food Banks Mississauga’s Thanksgiving Drive. This collective effort reminds us of the positive impact we can make when we come together. While the goal was achieved, the growing rate of our city’s food bank usage is alarming. Let’s continue to work together for a city where no one goes hungry,” says Mayor Carolyn Parrish.

With the funds raised, Food Banks Mississauga can provide healthy fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable food for over 844,000 meals to neighbours in need across the city, through its network of 60+ agency members. But as the city faces a critical time, the organization continues to work diligently to raise funds.

“We’re grateful for the community’s support and efforts in helping us meet the growing demand this Thanksgiving season. It’s because of you that we reached our goal and provided immediate relief to our neighbours facing food insecurity,” says Meghan Nicholls, CEO of Food Banks Mississauga. “The relief we provide is much-needed but temporary. The rising cost of living and underfunded social assistance programs are keeping our neighbours from making ends meet. We’re seeing more folks with employment turn to us, including former donors. While we advocate for long-term solutions, we can continue providing emergency food support because of your generosity.”
