Food Banks Mississauga Closes Spring Drive raising over $670,000
As the organization projects it will provide over 10 million pounds of food this year
Food Banks Mississauga’s 2024 Spring Drive ran from March 8 to April 30, 2024, raising $678,243, thanks to the community’s support. Donations were matched by returning Spring Drive sponsor Scotts Canada Ltd.
The campaign launched with a $800,000 goal, reflecting the need for more funds to be raised to match the demand for food support from folks across Mississauga experiencing food insecurity. In the month of April, Food Banks Mississauga and its network of 65+ agency members served 18,340 food bank users – a 29% increase compared to the previous year.
“Thank you to our community for continuing to rally behind us to support their neighbours in need. While we did not receive enough donations to meet our goal this year, the community made valiant efforts to meet the ever-increasing need,” says Meghan Nicholls, CEO of Food Banks Mississauga.
“Food insecurity is continuing to worsen as government funding for social assistance programs is so low that it legislates our neighbours into living in poverty. Our agency members are sharing with us how they are maxing out and will hit their ceiling soon, as we are all forced to increase our capacity every month. While we advocate for our elected officials to step up and implement policies to bring about long-term, systemic change, I’m grateful for our generous and compassionate supporters who were by our side during the Spring Drive and continue to support their neighbours.”
As the weather gets warmer and summer months approach, school meal programs across the city will shut down as the school year comes to an end. This means that children and families who rely on this consistent food support will go without.
