With Food Banks Mississauga now serving 1 in 13 Mississauga residents, up from 1 in 37 in 2019, a motion to declare food insecurity an emergency in Mississauga was passed by the Mississauga City Council on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.

This formal city-wide declaration is a monumental step in recognizing:

  • Food insecurity has gone beyond crisis levels.
  • Food insecurity is not a temporary issue and more needs to be done at all levels of government to solve this problem long-term.

We’re calling on our community to make a gift this holiday season to provide food to neighbours in need today while also sending a message to your Member of Parliament (MP) demanding a Groceries and Essentials Benefit to support our neighbours for tomorrow.

The Groceries and Essentials Benefit, introduced by Food Banks Canada and other organizations, is the best way to provide immediate income support to those who need it most. It was
designed to help households struggling to afford living costs, like rent and groceries, by adjusting the GST/HST credit.

Act now to stop the growing food insecurity crisis and make sure that your neighbours don’t fall further behind:
