Mississauga, the provincial election is coming up on June 2 and we want to make sure our community is prepared to head to the polls!
Our CEO, Meghan Nicholls, hosted a panel discussion with three former food bank users to discuss how their experiences relate to major issues in this upcoming election.
You’ll hear from Bruna, a volunteer at The Mississauga Food Bank, who shares why affordable housing is vital to helping those who are food insecure. Tinuola is the CEO of House of Praise and Prayer Food Pantry and Kitchen, one of the 50+ agencies in our network, and talks about her journey as a newcomer who had to rely on a food bank to now running her own food pantry to serve neighbours in need. Doris is a member of the Peel Poverty Reduction Committee and shares her experience of being on ODSP and how social assistance rates have not kept up with inflation and the cost of living.
Keeping these stories and issues in mind when you cast your vote will help put Ontario on the right track to eradicating poverty.
As our community continues to recover from the pandemic, we are still seeing a growing number of vulnerable neighbours turning to The Mississauga Food Bank. We distribute 25% more food each month compared to pre-pandemic.
The Mississauga Food Bank will strive to leverage our platform and network to advocate for structural solutions. This election, we need all parties to commit to action on poverty so we can turn the tide on food bank use.
